Edgewood District Veterans
History
Edgewood District Veterans (EDV) of San Antonio, Texas was organized on November 1, 2006, as the Edgewood School District Veterans by a small group of Viet Nam War military veterans from within the district who wanted to improve the economic and social trends in their community. The organization is comprised of those military servicemembers – all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces — who lived/work in the district; non-military “Associate” members are welcomed. The EDV obtained a federal 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation on 6 December 2007 and then was incorporated in the state of Texas in 2009. This group of veterans and other district alumni first began donating time and money to help the homeless, children and needy families within the district. As their membership grew, so did their commitments and programs for the Edgewood district community.
The EDV has continued to grow with over two-hundred members who dedicate themselves to support local veteran activities and fundraising efforts towards awarding high school scholarships, providing winter coats and items for Elementary School students under the “Project Warm” program and purchasing supplies and equipment for the schools within the district. Their major fundraising events include the annual Golf Classic and the Spaghetti Dinner along with other raffles.
Some accomplishments attributed to EDV include:
- Establishing a Viet Nam veteran’s monument at the Edgewood District Veterans Stadium located on the grounds of John F. Kennedy High School.
- Renaming of an elementary school in honor of U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Roy Cisneros, a resident of the district, who received a posthumous award of the Navy Cross and the coveted Texas Congressional Medal of Honor.
- Collaborating with Prairie View A&M University and the Edgewood School District Board of trustees to provide mentorship training.
- Celebrating the commissioning of a Coast Guard Cutter in honor of Edgewood student Heriberto S. “Ed” Hernandez who served on the USCGC Point Cypress and was fatally wounded in 1968 during a reconnaissance mission in the Viet Nam War. Hernandez posthumously received the Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart.
- Awarding $15,000 annually for scholarships since 2016.
- Performing Color Guard honors and Flag Details for funeral since 2017.
Most recently in year 2025, several members of the Edgewood District Veterans took part in the KSAT Television filming of the Emmy Award winning “San Antonio to Saigon” documentary.
